Security

Threat model, credential handling, and how to report a vulnerability.

Threat model — please read before deploying anywhere but your own machine

PoseForge is a local-first, single-user application. It is designed to run on your own computer, not to be exposed to a network or deployed as a shared/multi-user service. Specifically:

  • There is no authentication or authorization layer. Anyone who can reach the port PoseForge listens on can use every feature, including reading your saved characters, generation history, and uploaded photos.
  • OpenAI, Google Gemini, Replicate, and fal.ai API keys configured through Settings are stored in plain text in the local PGlite or PostgreSQL database. Saved ComfyUI workflow JSON is also plain text. There is no encryption at rest.
  • Uploaded and generated images are stored unencrypted on the local filesystem under storage/.

If you deploy PoseForge on a server, behind a reverse proxy, or on a shared machine, you are taking on all of the above as your own responsibility — this project does not currently provide the access controls that would make that safe. Contributions that add an opt-in auth layer are welcome (see ARCHITECTURE.md for where that would plug in), but until then, treat PoseForge as a personal, local tool.

Privacy and safety note

PoseForge is built for family photos, often of children. A few things worth being deliberate about:

  • Only upload photos of people who have consented (or, for minors, whose parent/guardian has consented) to having their photo processed by an AI image-generation engine.
  • ComfyUI can remain fully local when its endpoint is on the same machine. Every hosted API engine and signed-in CLI engine—including Codex CLI and Google Antigravity—sends the selected reference images, prompt, and settings to its provider for processing. Review that provider's data-handling policy before uploading photos, especially photos of children.
  • PoseForge includes no product analytics or background telemetry. Provider APIs and installed CLIs may collect their own operational or account data.

See PRIVACY.md for the engine-by-engine data-flow matrix, local storage, credential handling, logs, and telemetry policy.

Reporting a vulnerability

If you find a security issue in PoseForge itself (not in one of its third-party engines/dependencies), please report it privately rather than opening a public issue — open a GitHub Security Advisory on this repository, or contact the maintainer directly. We'll acknowledge reports within a few days and aim to have a fix or mitigation plan within two weeks for anything serious.

Please do not report vulnerabilities in Codex CLI, Google Antigravity, ComfyUI, or hosted providers themselves here—those should go to their respective maintainers.

Supported versions

PoseForge does not yet have a formal release/support cadence (see CHANGELOG.md). Until a 1.0 release, only the latest commit on main is supported.
